You increase power by burning more fuel, but to burn more fuel, you need more oxygen, hence turbo/super compressors. You can also achieve this by increasing the oxygen content at atmospheric pressure. The problem is, though, enriching with pure O2 will cause super high combustion temps and hole a piston pronto.
You CAN, however, get extra O2 in by using N2O i.e., nitrous oxide. At combustion temps, the N2O molecule is broken into elemental N and O. The O allows more fuel to burn, hence more power, and the N acts as a temperature buffer, helping prevent meltdown. You MUST increase fuel delivery via increased injector timing or, as on the setup in my Porsche 944, increased fuel pressure via the FPR (just like a turbo.) If not, you get a super lean situation and, voila, holed piston, just like pure O2.
