Car Synopsis: 1995 900S Cvt. 2.3L Auto, 125k miles, oil changes every 3-5k miles with 10w30 non-synthetic oil, 20k miles per year, 60%/40% highway/city driving.
I posted am message on Monday asking for advice on a flickering oil light at idle. As of now there are no bad or unusual noises.
Well, I changed the oil and filter. After pouring the oil from the drain pan there were small, silver metal particles left on the bottom. Disecting the oil filter revealed only one sliver of metal. I felt some very fine grit (it was black) when I rubbed some of the oil from the element between my fingers. It didn't dawn on me until now (too late) to check if the grit was magnetic.
Per Dean and Anders I removed the pressure relief cap and spring but could not get the plunger out. I think this indicates a scratched/damaged valve.
So I am thinking I will need to do the balance shaft dance. Does anyone (are you listening ChrisL?) have some ideas about what parts to replace?
I was thinking of all balance shaft system parts, the oil pump, relief valve, and crank seal. Anything else? Timing chain, tc guides? I would like to order everything at once. eeuroparts has all the bs parts for about $275. They don't list the oil pump or relief valve. Autopartspeople.com ad two pumps listed, one for $135 and another for twice that? What's the difference?
