Did the front again. Used Ultra Black, turns out it is silicone based also, oh well, the parts store didn't have any non-silicone, I've got the procedure down. Some new quirks this time. First, I used a "helicoil" for the first time on one of the stripped VC bolt holes. Real cool, but man, I can see where you could get in a lot of trouble if you slipped and drilled too deep, or made your hole too wide, and there are tons of shavings to clean up.

Second, in a fit of inspiration, I used PB Citrus degreaser to clean off the metal surface and the VC (after removing the old gasket, of course), got it real clean to take the new gasket. And I had the luxury of letting the car sit for about 17 hours to let the stuff set before I started the engine.

The next morning and ...

The leak seems to be from somewhere else, most likely the camshaft seal. Oh well, the VC was leaking too, so that's taken care of.
