Coolant loss resulting in severe overheating

Yesterday, 70 miles after the 95K scheduled major service performed by my dealer, my '98 900SE Conv. experienced total loss of coolant on the highway. The coolant level low indicator came on first. After I cleared that message the red exclamation point within the triangle came on in the center of the speedometer. Sure enough, the temp needle was in the red (It went beyond the red). I had to travel about 1/2-3/4 mile before I could stop safely. The dealer is currently checking the car which I had towed back to them. Questions. What is the likelyhood of severe engine damage? What signs should I be looking for when I get the car back? If it was a mechanic's negligence that caused this problem, how would I know that? What recourse do I have? I suspect that the recent major service which includes a change of coolant is the reason for this incident. I have maintained my car as though I was going to keep it forever. Never missed a 3000 mile oil change and fixed everything that has ever gone wrong in a timely manner. Now I feel as though all my effort has been wasted. I would like to hear from some of you.
