I bought a '95 900s 5spd convert. (55k miles) 4 months ago. Cannot recommend it highly enough. The 2.3l non turbo engine gets great ratings for its durability. Seems like the V6 (via Opel) had problems, so I'd stay away from that. However, its only been 4 mos, so verdict may still be pending. Handling, drivetrain, comfort are stellar.
I've seen a fair # of postings on this site advising against the '95/'96 NG900, however just as many notes voicing solid support. So, it comes down to whether you like the car, and its in good shape.
For comparison, I bought mine in Charlotte, NC for $5800, which was $600 below book value. I spent $100 to have the 1/2 gears of shifter aligned a bit, but so far its been a superb car.
I've owned many VW bugs and a Peugeot, so I understand the love behind niche cars. I'd recommend the '95.
