The clutch is slipping or the clutch cable failed? Some 97's had cable clutches if I recall right, thinking that it was a mid production year change to the hydraulic clutch.
Clutch wear depends on how much city driving you do, and mostly on your clutch skills. The rate of clutch wear can vary from oe driver to the next by two orders of magnitude.
It its slipping, then you have no choice but to fix it. You might want to replace the engine rear seal for good measure while you are in that. If the flywheel needs to be machined, then the seal is fully exposed.
Many renew the clutch fork and seal too. And the trany seals, or at least the trany input shaft seal.
