It would probably reduce MPG's but the small change might be lost in the noise of normal day to day variations from weather and traffic speeds.

The only way to tell is to remove the stat and look at it. The temperature is stamped into it, very easy to see. If your temp guage reads low now, it should not change with highway speeds VS city. And a lower reading means that the temperature is below the range of varability that the ECU masks from view. The engine temperature seen by the sesor varies all of the time and the stats to cycle constantly. The ECU hides this from view on the Saabs. So if your reading looks low all of the time, it is probably the wrong spec or defective.
