Can I switch to synthetic for gearbox?

Can I use synthetic in my manual gearbox on my 97 900SE? The owner's manual says DO NOT use synthetic, but I recall my mechanic putting synthetic in my previous Saab.
Also, does the gearbox oil need to change? I've noticed that the car is difficult to shift into 1st when it's cold. After a couple of minutes of driving it loosens right up. I figured I should change the oil. I assumed synthetic was the way to go.
