CD changer in trunk not recognized

I read through a lot of posts on this site for this but I just have a quick/easy question. Now just to let you know I'm not the best DIYer when it comes to cars but more of a tinker-er (previous to the Saab I owned a 80 Fiat Spyder 2000 so I was forced to learn a lot). The post that seems to hit this on the head is this post:
http://saabnet.com/tsn/bb/NG900/index.html?bID=58652
The question I have is what is the head unit? It sounds like this is saying to take the radio out of the dash (since it talks of the special tool). Is this true? Just wanted to make sure before doing anything or causing any unneeded damage.
On a side note: A little while back I tried disconnecting the changer, in the trunk, but couldn't. Is there a trick to this connection? Or it could be I was just being too careful for fear of breaking the connector.
Just seems strange that the changer will work every so often independent of the weather or the time the car has been running.
Thanks,
John
