I knew it was a timing chain - I was just using timing belt in the generic sense. I've been reading posts about it for the past year to keep updated on others experiences and stay informed about warning signs.
There seems to be a fairly well-documented yet still mysterious problem around this bboard about the balance chain and timing chain being defective for a couple years of 900's. My mechanic seemed to echo the same sentiments. He just works on Saabs, and has noticed a large number of timing chain failures on 900's from the mid-90's once they get past 100K.
So it's always been lurking, and particularly as things continue failing on the car, I keep on thinking it's the timing chain that finally snapped (fuel pump died last month).
Anyone keeping stats on this problem? Does it pay to be proactive? Obviously it could kill the car if I don't replace it, but am I just being paranoid? There's a "slight noise coming from the timing chain" according to the mechanic, but it's nothing I've ever really noticed.
