I changed rims this weekend - from 17" Saab/BBS rims to a set of Tire Rack Borbetts and Kuhmo Ecsta tires - and got some pleasant surprises!

While I love the 17"rims - I've got through 5 sets of tires in 75,000 miles - it was getting to me to put $500 into tires every 4 or 5 months.

So how do the 195x60x15s compare with the 215x45x17s?? Some surprises: For a start the tires are MUCH quieter - largely due to the less aggressive tread pattern. The ride is a touch less harsh (I have Eibachs and Konis). Cornering doesn't have the same "lynx like" feel - but I'm finding I'm not having to slow down any on the curves. The big surprise came with gas milage - I routinely get 27.3 mpg for my mix of town and freeway driving with occasional runs of up to 29.5mpg if I'm driving "gently" (62mph) - on the first 322 miles after putting on the new tires I'm up to 32.6 mpg!! And it may be in my head, but acceleration appears better.

And thoughts as to why the difference??
