I agree with Dave, when it comes to brakes, it is best to know what you are doing, since it is YOUR LIFE that is on the line. With that said, the brake pads/calipers TLC is a real easy DIY (assuming you know the difference between a torx and a philips screwdriver, what a socket wrench is and the difference between plyers and a hammer). Of course, like with anything that involves your car, you should read up on it before attempting anything.

Like you, I had no idea what a caliper was when I first found this board. In fact this is my first car EVER. While I was familiar with the basics of bicycles (I was a cyclist once) I have never owned or driven a car before I owned my Saab. With the help and advice of many I have been able to solve a lot of problems while saving huge amounts of money in Labor costs (shift linkage, radiator hoses replacement, brakes and brake pads, door locks, CD player, battery, headlights, etc.). Making the transition from bicycle mechanics to cars was pretty straight forward. In fact, bicycles and car disks brakes are very similar in principle!

I would recommend that you purchase a Hayenes manual IF and only IF you are interested in DO IT YOURSELF repairs. In the long run, it will be a good starting point. I would also recommend checking the website howstuffworks.com It will help demystify your vehicle and make the things under the hood make a little more sense.

Good luck whichever route you decide to go. Just remember if you chose the DIY way, there is great help in these forums.
