Clutch cable question

Has anyone ever modified the infamous clutch cable to make it "manual adjust" instead of "automatic adjust"? Recently, the automatic adjustment mechanism (more like mindless, but anyway) failed, and I was left with a clutch that engaged about 2" from the floor. In messing around with the cable in the engine bay, I saw that there is some clearance around the area where the end of the cable engages the clutch arm on the transmission. If a manual cable adjustment feature were installed here, a cable take-up device or turnbuckle-type thinky, then you could just turn a nut every other month to keep the clutch tight. The other inaccessible end under the dash would be the fixed end.
Thoughts anybody?
Thanks
JMJ
