The balance chains seem to be rather hard on their sprockets and the tensioner. So when these go bad, some just remove the chains and do something to keep the tensnioner from blowing oil. I expect that the shafts themselves are not comming out unless the engine is pulled. So disconnection seems the best alternative to removal. Removal might leave some oil feeds to bearings open which could kill oil pressure.
