I'm just going under the assumption that the plastic thing was part of the lower idler since it was stuck on there. It's open-ended on the bottom and hollow and it was about as big and thick as a good sized doughnut...mmm...doughnut...but I couldn't figure out how the belt originally fit around the pulley with the large doughnut in the way. Just looking for some reassurance that it was indeed part of that pulley. Otherwise, I've got phantom objects from other parts of the engine showing up in the wrong neighborhood.
The hangup on listening for timing chain noise AFTER replacing the serp belt, is that in my post from a few days ago (http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/NG900/index.html?bID=81512), I was considering just taking it to the shop to have the timing and serp replaced at the same time. I've never really noticed a lot of noise, but the mechanic has said he recognizes the familiar call for help from the timing chain. Now, when the weather warms up and I spend the few hours fixing it, if there's still noise, it could still be a noisy crank shaft and not timing related at all...right? What to do about a noisy crank shaft when the serp has already been replaced?
