I just did the "short belt" replacement on my wife's 97 900S Convt at 73,000 miles. Several weeks ago, after reading posts here about pulley failures and belt replacement I decided to order the replacement parts and convert to the short belt configuration (one less pulley to fail in the future). At the time, there was no indication of a problem. Since the weather has been cold I planned to delay the installation, but while checking over the car (the night before my wife's planned long trip) I was surprised by a fairly loud "wuuuring" noise from the right side of the engine.
It only took about an hour to remove the old pulleys and replace the belt. And would have been faster if I had removed the inner wheel well liner sooner. With the pulleys out of the car both were very loose and noisy and one had an intermittent bind - trouble was on the way. It was remarkable how fast they had begun to fail (less that 2 weeks).
So, I would say that you are in the zone for replacement. It may be a bit conservative to change them now but they are not likely to last too much longer and the cost/time is low for DIY project.
Thanks again to Dean and the others for the short belt tip and all the other good info.
