Before undertaking such a big job, I would really make Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Timing Chain Replacement Procedures 94 2.0 Turbo, SaabNuss, Sat, 15 Mar 2003 18:42:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
sure that the timing chain or balance chain is the culprit.
The shop labor to replace all these parts is around 15 hours.
When you had the serpentin belt off, did you start the engine to make sure it's not the water pump or alternator making the noise?
It might also be that the rubber pad inside valve cover have bowed a little and that the chain is hitting that pad. Do you know which one I'm talking about?
What I would do is to take the valve cover off, inspect the chain and see how much play it have by lifting it with my finger between the two upper sprockets. If it's loose, I would take an adjustable wrench and move the intake camshaft backwards and listen/see if the automatic timing chain tensioner snaps out another tooth and tighten the chain.
And I would install a new pad inside the V/C.
If it's quiet, you found the problem. This will take about one hour.
