Eric--
I have a '95 SEt with 209K. My 900 has been relatively trouble free. Most of the things that needed to be replaced just plain wore out. The waterpump was replaced at 172K (not noisy or leaking badly--had just started to seep a bit.) The alternator was replaced at the same mileage (noisy bearings). The fuel pump gave it up at 183K. Turbocharger is still stong (a tad smoky when you stand on the gas--the inner seal is begining to show its age) and the rotten New England roads just claimed the life of the right front spring. I've never had to replace the head gasket (just starting to weep a bit). I did have the balance shaft chains removed (as in taken out and thrown away--they are totally uneccessary) at 172K as they were getting a bit noisy. The original timing chain is still in the engine and is fine--not noisy. The gearbox did fail at 90K (snapped pinion shaft) but Saab gave us a reman box that had been sofar bulletproof. My 900 came to live with me five and a half years ago with 19K on the clock, so, as you can see, we do a bit of driving!! The key to keeping a Saab running forever is maintenance. I've gone pretty much by the book and have a great mechanic who looks out for me, my Saab and my pocketbook (thank you Mike Connelly and crew!!)Stay away from dealers--all they know how to do is siphon money out of your wallet and guarantee that you'll come back for more bad service and half-assed repairs. Find a good independent and stick to the book, and you should have no trouble!!
Good luck!!
