Shimmy in the Saab (long)

Been noticing a little steering-wheel shimmy in my '95 900S lately. It's not too bad, just enough to rattle my watch. Worse when traveling uphill or accelerating hard, but always present. It's just showed up over the past week or so. I was just wondering if anybody could help me track it down.
Also, is changing front struts a DIY deal? I always thought it wasn't, but a friend of mine (who has far less mechanical ability than I) put new struts on his sister's car (late 90's Civic) and said it was a piece of cake. He just borrowed a spring compressor from Autozone. I remember a bit of commotion about a nut at the top of the strut that's really hard to turn, is this the case? Does this nut need to be touched to change struts? I'd like to do it by myself to save cash and time (I've never been out of a suspension/brake place in less than 6 hours). Any hints or tips?
Finally, what is the best brand of strut when it comes to value? I value comfort an little more than handling, and don't want adjustable damping or anything, just something for the car to sit on. Any good places to buy? Sponsors?
