Someone had a dealer/indi suggest and make the change a long time ago, was not my idea. However, at one point the 9-3's started to come from the factory without a lower pully. So thats the proof of concept. So a $18 belt instead of $50, plus you save $38 on a lower pully and you avoid a very difficult job of doing the R&R on it. You cannot use the belt for the 9-3 that has this arangement, it is too short. Saab changed a few of the pully diameters and upper idler pully and its mount are totally different too, so it cannot be used. So you need the stock upper idler pully and the GM belt. You can now carry a spare belt. Change the upper pullie before it is worn out and keep that for a spare with the belt. Lots of room with the spare tire. A length of 1/2x1/2" square tubing and a 1/2 or 13MM box wrench and you are good to go.
So if this config is shipped from the factory, why not save the $70?
