I would not put much into the box. Enough to be secure and to take a fillet of adhesive. Additional length will not improve anything. You need enough length to go forward to avoid hot air from under the hood. You could try heating up the end of the tubing and expanding it to a flare reduce entrance losses.
The original 50mm tube extends into the air box to increase the mass of air in the tube, which filters out high frequency noise. You will hear losts of turbo whoosh and spoolup frequencies.
The improvement will not be so much from the reduction of the tube length, but the reduction in flow speeds required to get through the tube. Any kinetic engery gained by the flow is irreversably lost in the air box. So the bigger the better. The dynamic flow losses will be reduced by around 3**2 / 2**2 or 2.25. These flow losses are powered by pressure drops.
I suggest using 'Goop' adhesive. It will take a while to dry and to build up. It will take the heat. If silicone glue will adhere, it will be good too. The poly polypropylene air box may resist things sticking to it. I would rough the joint area with sand paper.
