Hven't seen a post lately on the V6 serpentine belt tensioner, figured I'd post a procedure, which I did last night:
The belt tensioner pulley would spin freely when turned by hand with the belt off, according to "The Deanster" this means there is no more lubricant, failure imminent. Anyhoo, I ordered just the pulley, but they sent the whole tensioner assembly. The new pully turned with some effort, obviously full of grease, so it was clearly time for replacement.
After removing the belt from the pulley and the intake hose/air filter assembly, you need to remove two bolts holding the tensioner assembly on, located about directly below where all of the vacuum hoses enter the intake manifold, toward the rear of the engine compartment, again, below where the throttle cable attaches. You will need to move some of the hoses out of the way for access. You can just barely see the top bolt. I think it was about a 14 mm hex bolt, using a ratchet, there was just enough room to reach down and unbolt both bolts. remove the old assembly, clean the bolts, I applied a little loctite blue, figuring I never want to mess with this again.
Finesse the new assembly down there, you need to feel where the two bolt holes are, there is no room to visualize. Tighten the two bolts first by hand then with the ratchet. Torque is 30 ft/lbs, I was only able to reach the top bolt to torque b/c there is a piece of something or other in the way of the bottom (my torque wrench has a bigger head than my ratchet).
Re-install the belt, intake tube, run the engine for a second to check belt, you're done.
Time: about 1 hour 10 minutes including installing a new sun visor.
Effort: Basic skills, takes some patience to get the bolts threaded properly.
Symptom: worn pulley, I was hearing a scraping sound from the area related to engine speed
Result: New pulley, scraping sound still there, it might be the stationary pully, which I'm going to do this weekend.
Next up: stationary pulley and oil pan gasket, stay tuned!
