I am posting this because somebody on this list may need to do this in the future. Threads turned out to be M18x1.5 mm as the new ones ordered by the dealer came in. I did not need them anyhow, until the ones with the worn, rounded heads could be taken out, presumably involving hours of frustration.
Instead, here is what I did:
I took some high tensile strength 3/8" hex head bolts, cut them with only 5/8" threads showing, and the last 1/4" of threads rounded on purpose to measure 5/16" diameter so that they would fit snugly inside the worn socket heads of the existing transmission plugs.
I then got some help welding these together while the plugs were still on the transmission. This required a willing Welder, some patience, skill and maneuvering; but took only 1/2 hours for all three bolts, after taking the left tire and the battery out to improve accessability. The welder decided to use stick welding in the case of the two side plugs to improve adhesion.
He put his ground clamp connection on the top front part of the transmission so that the current loop would stay only in that vicinity.
Result is strong, reliable plugs that can be undone with a 3/8" socket wrench which now are trouble free.
