O2 Sensor wiring - technical question

I have a 1994 V6. One of the wires (the green one) that is on the engine wiring harness of the front O2 sensor broke just before the connector. When I was trying to reconnect it, I noticed that I have a three wire O2 sensor and three wires on the engine connector end. There is, however, a fourth uninsulated wire that comes from the engine end and stops just short of the connector in a type of coaxial rubber connection. It is the same type of set up on the rear O2 sensor. My problem is that coaxial type connector is impacted by trying to splice the green wire. Does anyone know what that uninsulated wire is for? It does not connect to the plug used to connect the O2 to the engine wiring harness. Can I strip some of it back to reconnect the green wire or should I get a "new" connector from a junk car somewhere and splice the whole thing in further up the wiring harness? Any ideas?
