Where to start?
I have owned a '97 900SET for three years and it has made me a Saabophile. So when I needed to add to my fleet, I bought a '97 900S NA with 98,000 miles, thinking simpler engine, simpler problems if they should arise.
Had this car checked out (but not by a Saabster unfortunately) and all seemed fine, including compression test. So I bought it; then I noticed this whine sound. Took it to my Saab indie shop and $1600 later the whine is gone but the prognosis is not good. They had to drop the engine once and oil pan twice and remove head once to clean out gobs of freakin' sludge that had clogged everything up. The whine was probably the oil pump cavitating. Turns out I am a victim of the engine lubrication problem on the 2.3 talked about on this board upon occasion as well as some spotty oil changes.
So now the sludge is out, new oil flushed through twice, and the engine quiet. BUT according to the shop, my oil pressure when measured with gauges is still about 12 psi LOW. The only explanation they offer is that the crankshaft bearings are worn down and oil is leaking through. MY QUESTIONS - PLEASE HELP:
1. Is this plausible that crankshaft bearing leak through could degrade the maesured oil pressure by 12 psi? That's alot.
2. What are other causes for a low oil pressure considering what has been done?
3. Would MOA or other additive be useful now?
4. Would synth oil going forward help?
5. What are some things (a checklist maybe) that I should ask the shop if they did to make sure they covered everything? For example, I did not ask if they cleaned the oil intake screen...
6. Should I replace the crankshaft bearings or just run this engine until I need a new one altogether?
7. Why did I not buy the turbo engine with this second car ?!!?
8. Any and all suggestions and advice!!!!
Thanks John
