CEL comes on when gas tank is almost empty? Posted by Todd [Email] (#958) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Todd) on Fri, 18 Apr 2003 13:32:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi all. I am seeing a pattern with my check engine light that I wanted to run by everyone.
About a month ago I put some low grade fuel (85 or 87 octane, here in Colorado where the 3 ranges are 85, 87, and 91) to see if I could get by (I usually use the best, 91 but at over $2.00 a gallon it's getting pricey!).
The engine ran a little off during that tank, and the CEL came on half way through the tank. I ran the tank down to empty and put in the good stuff (91). The light went off shortly after. Once I got to the bottom of the tank again, the CEL came on again. Filled it up with 91 and it went out. At the end of this tank, the CEL comes on again! Just filled up yesterday and the CEL is off again. (I'm also cycling the ignition ~20 times to help accelerate the process)
First, could lower octane gas make the CEL come on? If so, would having only a small amount of gas in the tank cause the CEL to get triggered again?
Thanks!
Todd
