Weekend project: engine mount -- auto trans

The procedure's been posted here many times. Symptoms: auto tranny, when stopped in "drive" the steering wheel would shake, often the dash would join in; clunky shifting. Replaced the engine mount that is under the battery on the driver's side. The hard part was getting to the two bolts holding the mount to the transmission. Needed a 7" extension, 1/2 drive ratchet to get the proper angle and leverage. I almost gave up, until I realized that the block of wood under the jack, holding up the trans., was in the way of my getting just a little more leverage from ratchet, then the bolts popped loose.
Question: there was a 1/4" piece of foam between the mount and the trans, it was fairly well torn apart. I did my best to "permatex" it in place, but I suspect it will eventually fall off. Is this a necessity? What's it for? It is not held in place between the mount and the trans, it is generally loose.
Symptoms mostly gone, engine shifts smoother, much less shaking when stopped, I probably need to do the passenger side one also, some other time though, its not as urgent now.
