I am sorry about your troubles.
They probably said they would be replacing your voltage regulator. With modern car electronics, any unclean power can cause permanent damage. There are so many delicate integrated circuits in modern cars. And the trend is toward even greater reliance on computer technology. Everything from climate control to body systems (power windows, etc.) is controlled by computers these days. It's no longer simple analog devices and wiring you can check with a simple multimeter. These days you need computers... to diagnose computers.
The moral of the story is: any indication of electrical anomaly in a modern car should be treated as a serious problem and investigated quickly and properly. We are talking very serious expenses...
Talking about expenses, you may want to check around your area to see if you can find a used ECU from a wrecked vehicle. Get the part number from the dealer before you start making calls.
