SRS Light: SRS computer or bad wiring?

I have a check SRS light on the dash of my 97 900SET, need some quick advice. I did a search through the archives and it looks like a lot of people have wiring harness problems, or a ground fault of some sort. Horn still works so it's not the clockspring (according to the mechanic).
Anyway, my mechanic (who I took my car to at the recommendation of the "mechanics" section on the site, nice guy), read the diagnostic codes and tells me it is either a faulty SRS computer unit or "bad wiring." He suggests first trying to replace the SRS computer with a used one, and if that doesn't work try to trace the wiring problem. My question is this: should I have him try tracing the wiring problem BEFORE he replaces the SRS computer?
Judging by the posts on the subject, it seems wiring failure of some sort is more likely than a bad SRS computer. I just don't want to go through the cost if replacing a perfectly good SRS computer when it seems (to me, although I just got the car and am new at the saab thing), that wiring is the more likely culprit. Advice?
