Sounds like you lost a pulley and it took the belt with it. The serpentine belt runs the alternator, waterpump and A/C, so, even if the car started, you shouldn't try to drive it,or you'll ocerheat the engine.
The top idler pulley is usually the one that fails first and quickest. If you heard a grinding noise, I'd be willing to bet that the top pulley made a quick exit and took your belt with it. It's a fairly easy fix (altho I don't DIY the Saabs) it shouldn't take a good indie anymore than an hour to fix.
