1995 900S Wacko Temperature Gauge

For the last year or so I have been having problems with my engine temperature gauge. Sometimes it doesn't move off "L" unless I wrap the top of the dash; other times it will suddenly drop from "normal" to "L" until I smack the dash. Actually I've recently found it is easier to make it snap back to "normal" by thumping the plastic instrument window right in front of the temperature gauge (like you would tweak somebody's ear). So it must be a bad connection.
Is there a wire connector plug on the back of the gauge that could be loose? Must the instrument panel be removed, or is it easier to get to the back of it by removing the radio and SID?
