Convertible top problems...

I have a 95 900 S Converitble. Just this week it started to make a single thud sound when the hard tonneau cover was raising to lower the roof. Today I tried to put the top down and the single thud noise was several thuds that sound like the teeth in two gears skipping over each other. Not a grinding sound. The tonnaeu cover would not raise more than about a 45 degree angle and I stopped immediately so as not to grind the gears.
To me...it sound like an actuator motor is loose and and the drive gear is just jumping because it cant make a good mesh with the other gear. But Im not sure how the the hard tonneau cover drive system actually works. But thats what it sounds like.
How do I get to that assembly so I can inspect it and see what is going on? And does anyone have any ideas as to what may be wrong and how I can correct the problem?
Thanks!!!
