Ahhh... tradeoffs...
The first question I have for you is whether or not you ever plan to upgrade your system beyond this initial upgrade? And whether or not you are aiming for a 'stock' look. I retained the stock headunit and I think I spent 3-4 times the effort I needed to to hook everything up (the infamous DIN pre-amp adapter and low voltage amp trigger). Integration with the display is a minmum benefit at best. I have 1900 Watts of amplification so the speed adaptive volume control in the head unit is more of a torture device than anything to overcome road noise.
If I had it all to do over, I would install a normal DIN sized aftermarket headunit (heresy, I know) and use the left over space to install my police band scanner.
Here is upgrade path that I would use to let me spend a little each time:
Stage 1:
35Wx4 CD/MP3 Headunit with 6 preouts, sub control and CD changer control
Replace 6.5 and 3.5 speakers with good 6.5 component speakers
keep 6x9 rears
Upgrading the fronts will give you a cleaner soundstage, rears are mainly fill.
Stage 2:
10" sub
sub amp (install a lot easier with aftermarket h/u)
CD changer
Sub will fill in the missing bass. Changer will help you avoid swerving.
Stage 3:
4 way main amp
replace rear speakers
Stage 4:
CAP
Deep Cycle Battery
Stage 5:
Sound processor with equalization and time correction
Upgraded alternator
