This past weekend I finished up mounting and wiring a trailer hitch on my '96 900SEt. I put on the Draw-tite # 36196 hitch, and used the drawtite modulite and wiring kit. The hitch went on smoothly - other than they have me bolts that were slightly too big for the car's frame holes. I had to bore the holes out slightly to deal with this, not realizing that the nuts and washers were the correct size ( and incorrect for the bolts). So I had to get some bigger nuts and washers - bigger is better, right? Took about 45 min to an hour to install the hitch, with bolt fishing and all.
The wiring went very smoothly too. I ran the power wire in from the battery, going through the firing wall at the rubber fitting just in front of the glove box, and then pulling trim and fishing to get it to the rear right taillight. That took about an hour. The modulite was set up for the left tail light, so the left tailight lead was short, and the right tailight lead was long. I had to cut the right wire shorter and splice the left signal wire to be longer. But, using my haynes manual to determine what wire was what, by color, the modulite was an easy install, and took about 20-30 minutes. That included pulling the trim piece below the rear hatch and running the wire from the right side to catch the left tailight signal.
Thanks to everybody on the list for their help and advice. Esp Jim for his recommendation of the drawtite hitch and his nice picture instructions - though the ones that came with the hitch are good too. And also David_m for his advice on wiring (even though I didn't take it, the info helped me weigh options and decide on the modulite.)
I would give both the draw-tite hitch and the modulite good recommendations.
