Here's the dirty little secret: all of the gas in a certain region comes from the same pipeline. Different companies only add their own additives when they extract it. The way it works is Shell, or Esso, or whoever, dumps, say, 15 barrels in at the end of the pipeline. So they don't have to wait for their 15 barrels to get to their remote pumping station hundreds of miles down the line, they just take 15 barrels out immediately. That way no one has to wait, but as long as the octane's the same, it all gets mixed together. They have ways of separating different octanes in the pipeline, but not brands.
