On the alleged environmental benefits from ethanol, the GAO says, "Available evidence suggests that the ethanol program has little effect on the environment." Getting rid of ethanol subsidies would "slightly increase carbon monoxide emissions . . . but slightly reduce emissions of ozone precursors."
A stinking pile of crap that is! Modern vehicles with closed loop O2 sensor controlled engines produce almost no CO an a lack of ethanol will not change this. The only vehicles that would be affected would be those that do not have oxygen sensors, and all vehicles with catayltic converters have these types of systems. So we are taking about vehicles that were pre-cat. That means vehicles that were designed to run on leaded gasoline! So for the very small number of these left on the road and the even smaller ratio of miles driven with these, we all have to pay more and get fuel that lowers our mpgs? It would be more cost effective to give the owners of those vehicles $100,000 if they would scrap their junkers.
