I have a 1995 Saab 900S that my family has had since it was new. We leased it initially and then purchased it off the lease, so the car has been in my family the entire time. Unfortunately, the warranty is long gone and we did not purchase an extended warranty. Over the past 4 years, the A/C Temperature Control Knob (that regulates whether warm or cold air is coming out of the vents) has broken several times (3 - 4 at this point is my best recollection). I have documentation on several of the repairs and in the past we were not charged for them (but I also believe the car was under warranty at that time). Once again, several weeks ago the knob simply snapped off as I was adjusting it. The last time it broke off was probably 1 - 2 years ago, but since that time I had complained about it being stiff and that it seemed ready to snap again. I've spoken with Saab USA several times and the best they're willing to do is offer me $200 in service vouchers that I can only use at a Saab-authorized service center. The two problems with that are that
1) the only Saab-authorized service center in my area is absolutely terrible and I do not trust them at all with my car (Dorschel Automotive in Rochester, NY) and
2) they tell me the repair will cost $400 so I'll still have to pay 1/2 of it.

From reading other posts on this bulletin board, it appears as if there's a Service Bulletin that's been issued on this exact problem. However, I'm not exactly sure what that means with respect to having Saab cover the repairs.

Thus far the Saab has been a very reliable car, but I'm really starting to experience some problems with Saab Service at this point. I think its grossly unfair for me to have to pay to repair a part that has broken several times in the past and was obviously designed defectively. However, short of actually attempting to sue Saab (which I really don't want to do), I can't think of any other resolution. Am I completely off-base here and is it reasonable for me to have to pay that $200, or can anyone offer me some other advice or help for this situation. Please feel free to post here or email me at mbressman@mail.newfseeds.com. Any advice is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

By the way, I just discovered this board a few months ago, and think its absolutely great!!

Thanks again!
