It could be your rheostat...try unpluging and replugging it. It pops out with a scrwdriver. Or you may simply need a new one. It also could be a wire harness behind the radio thats rubbing against the radio frame. I had the same experience in my '96 900S and the wir harness was rubbing against the frame which was causing the rheostat to periodically short out.
