Hi,

I replaced front and rear pads last summer for the first time. It was pretty simple.

When taking the old pads off, you will probably have to press the old pads back in a little to depress the pistons so that the pads will clear the ridge on the outside edge of the rotor (from normal wear).

Be sure to get new pad hardware (springs and pins), as doubtless you will find that the old ones will have corroded badly. While you have the rear wheels off, it would be a good idea to take the rear hubs off to inspect and lube the handbrake mechanism as these are notorious for sticking - how's the handbrake (aka emergency brake)? If it lacks bite, then normally this is the problem, as opposed to it requiring a simple adjustment.

Check the inboard rear pads for uneven wear (compared to the outboard pads). This is another common problem caused by the pads sticking in the caliper - this can alo result in a badly corroded inner rotor surface. When replacing the rear pads it is a good idea to grease the edges of the pad, as otherwise, they tend to corrode in the caliper slot, resulting in the sticking problem (poor design).

When bleeding the brakes, it is advisable NOT to depress the brake pedal all the way to the floor, as this can result in damage to the brake master cylinder (caused by piston seal passing over a ridge in the cylinder that may have built up through normal wear).

Lastly, remember to use dot 4 brake fluid (unlike me!!).
