How did they determine that you needed a new hi/lo pressure switch? Did they actually diagnose that problem or was it strictly a guess??
The way to figure these things out is to jump over various components in the system. If the compressor runs then you've just found the bad component. The leading culprit is the temperature sensor on the A/C compressor itself! It's screwed into the top of the compressor (and you DON'T need to evacuate the system to replace this $50 part).
Look at the compressor and you'll see a red wire (I think) leading to the sensor and then another wire coming out of the sensor and leading to the compressor again. Disconnect these wires and jumper around them. If the compressor runs then you've just solved the problem!
Replacing the sensor is a bit of a pain because the coolant hose running from the water pump is directly in the way. You usually need to drain the system and remove the hose to be able to get a socket wrench in there.
If that's not it then test the usual fuses and the A/C relay in the engine compartment. There is also an "antifreeze sensor" located on the condensor in the passenger side footwell area which can also go bad. I've NEVER heard of the pressure switch on the receiver/drier going bad. Sounds like the mechanic didn't know how to diagnose this problem!
