Loose rear brake pads

I have a 1996 SAAB 900s with 125K miles. I had the rear callipers rebuilt some time ago to fix a seizing problem and things have been fine until recently.
There is a constant rattling noise coming from the back of the car, but when I apply the brakes the rattling goes away.
I looked closely at the rear calipers and they seem to be in good condition, the brake discs aren't blue and there's no vibration while driving or braking. The brake pads ARE however loose in their holders - to the point that I can duplicate the rattling nosie I hear while driving just by moving them around with my fingers.
My question is - what holds the brake pads securely in their holders? THe rear brakes are also squealing quite a bit - is this an indication that the anti-squeal springs are missing/fallen out, etc?
Thanks
