your refrigerator, but in a more hostile environment. There is already some kind of oil in it for the compressor, apart from the refrigerant, these days typically R134.
With all the cars I 've had, the compressor was the thing that went first, average life about 3 years. (I live in the tropics, so it's used every day).
When you see compressor oil on the compressor housing and the driveway, you know it's on it's last legs.

The groaning (or hissing) sound when it cycles indicates it's getting low on refregerant. sometimes just topping it up helps.
If you have to top up often, you have a leak. Some shops have electronic sniffers, others use a kind of dye, and some just listen for leaks.
Look just behind the front grille behind the bumper, you'll see the drier (about the size of a soda can with a little glass window on the top). Removing the grille helps. With the engine runninng and the AC on, you should not see any bubbles in that window. If you do, you're low on refegerant.

You will eventually get low anyway. If there are no leaks, and it's been a long time between top-ups, it might be a good idea to get the system evacuated (most dealers now have recovery systems for the refrigerant - it's considered a CFC). The purpose is to get water out of the system. They then fill in new compressor oil (this is expensive stuff!) and then the refrigerant.
Water in the system sometimes does form ice crystals that can block the expansion valve, so it does not cool well even with a full charge of refrigerant.
