Whiff of burning smell, them Temp Gauge Reads Higher

Have a '97 900 SET auto, 89k miles. Temp gauge has always held steady at approx 8 o'clock position. Just got off the highway after a 15 mile commute, when I got a very short duration burning smell and the temp gauge started to rise. It stayed at the 9 o'clock position for remaining 4 miles home over local roads.
Checked over the car, belt looks good (has 40k miles on it), no loss of coolant, electric radiator fan came on as usual after commute. Drove to work this am (albeit at a steady 55-65 mph down the highway). Temp gauge rose normally, but again went to 9 o'clock. Putting ACC to Auto or Econ had no impact on gauge reading.
Anyone with a similar experience, or suggestion on where to look next? Thanks . . .
