I had an email exchange, 3 months ago, with oxygensensors.com about 4 wire units and the issue of grounds via the exhaust. This was the response. Remember, this response is to a specific question about grounds through the exhaust for 4 wire sensors.
" Most do still use the exhaust as ground. However, there is a style used on European models with a case ground. It actually has five wires."
So your conclusion that all four wire units have a ground wire built in is not justified. You cannot state that body to ground resistance does not matter at all. After installing a sensor you are not an expert.
The impedance of the sensor as a voltage source is VERY high. The affect of a few hundred ohms in this case may not create a sensor fault. But a signal bias may result that does not put the sensor out of range. The point of checking this resistance is to check for a connectivity problem before tossing out a good sensor. Many have taken this advice and solved the problem without replacing the sensor. And for other readers, you need a good DMM (digital multi meter) for this measurement and you may need a file to brighten contact points where the probe is used.
So you replaced a bad sensor, this is good. It is better to not replace a good sensor. Your cost was $100. The big issue is when there is a resistance at the turbo to downpipe and then both sensors can be faulted and you pay dealer prices for two sensors for around $200 each. There have been folks who replaced sensors and they had sensor faults after the new ones were installed. Guess why? The point is that you have to look deeper than replacing something because a fault code indicates a problem with that unit. The problem with the unit may not be a defective unit but something more subtle.
