A Haynes manual will tell you what you need to know. Remove the connector and you can do what you want with a jumper. Now consider that the indicator lamps in the instruments and dash etc will have a greatly shorter life at full power VS dimmed.
The unit in question is actually electronic and the variable resistor controls the electronics. It is not a power reheostat.
The fault with intermittant power on bumps may not be this unit. I would have the vehicle running in a dark location so that I could see the lamps, turn the dimmer to bright and start thumping things. A rubber hammer is good. Shock the dash area near the dimmer, then try elsewhere, including the fuse panel and ignition switch area. You might have to remove the cover above your feet and get at the stuff there. Also look for and check grounding points where black wires are bolted to the chassis. Try these with a wrench.
