In general, when this is done, the spark plug is replaced with a fitting and shop air is used to pressurize the cylinder. The air pressure will move the piston to BTC if not there all ready. The air pressure will hold the valves closed and a spring compressor is used to allow the spring to be removed. I don't know how this might be complicated in this engine.
Typically oil runs down the valve stems and uyou get oil smoke when you start the engine after it has been sitting for a while. If the exhaust valves only the plugs will not be oily. If the intake valve(s) the plug may show oil.
Low manifold pressures will draw oil down intake valves if the seals are bad. Inspect the oil drain passages from the head to the block.
