Metallic scraping noise from right rear brake

When braking lightly (as when coming into a turn), I will sometimes hear a metallic scraping noise coming from (what sounds like) the right rear wheel. This usually happens only in the morning. Braking performance seems unaffected. I use the parking/emergency brake daily.
Is it just the rust scraping off of the disk, or something more serious (like time for new pads and/or disks)?
BTW - I only have about 21K on these brake pads (86K now, replaced at 65K). At about 70-75K, I noticed a slight shudder which I thought was a case of warped disks. The dealer quoted an astronomical amount to replace the disks & pads, so I said "no thanks" and let it be. Upon inspection of my car, I noticed that the wheels were free of fingerprints... as iff the didn't remove the wheels at all to confirm that I needed new disks. The shudder has since faded and is no longer noticeable.
