I use a thin wire bent into a loop, get it in through the oil drain hole and try to catch areas to the sides and even on top of oil pick tub.
If sludge is present, it will end up on that wire and I can do a deeper check to determine if dropping the pan is necessary or if more frequent oil changes and another brand of oil will be enough.
I also open all the oil filters to check for debris.
As David says, it seems to be something going on with either design or oil quality of newer cars.
Why would suddenly Saab owners turn lazy with oil changes from 1994 NG900 models and up?
Of all the Saab engines I have seen through the years, why haven't I seen a big amount of neglected cars before 1994?
I know that the oil pick up screen had bigger holes on the older engines, and maybe that kept the oil circulating even when neglecting oilchanges.
With the fine mesh screen, maybe it starts to clog up more easily and slowly starve engine of oil making it run hotter and burn/crystalize oil more easily.
It also seems to be a fine design that the oil pressure switch keeps breaking more than ever before, leaving the driver unaware of impeding crisies.
Only about 5% of the drivers with broken oil pressure lights was aware of it, the rest of them didn't know until I told them.
It's just to many flickering lights on the dash at start up.
