I think you need negative back pressure realy to increase power so that the cylinders can have as much vacuum as possible before starting to suck air/fuel mixture (scavanging effect). If you disconnect the exhaust completelly you get zero back pressure but the engine runs less then perfect, and this is why an exhaust that generates less back pressure may actually reduce the power. To create negative back pressure you have to get the gases out of the engine at high speed. This can be achieved by reducing the diameter of the pipes at the expense of increasing back pressure. The manufacturers design the exhaust system for best compromise. Too much back pressure makes the engine work harder to extract gases, loosing horse power, and too little backpressure casues the gases to move slower loosing power as well.

As a general comment, I would say going for less back pressure will give you more peak power, while low rpm power will be not as good as the standard system. I would go though for less back pressure, increase the fueling to compensate for the loss of low rpm power while at the same time high rpm power will be further increased.
