Snow Tires for Better Traction/Pick-Up?

I have a 2001 Linear wagon that is fun and fast. I have just acquired a 1995 SE convertible that is even more fun but not as fast (even though I think they both have 185HP). It is really easily to spin the sport wheels on the covertible (16 inch?). My neighbor put two snow tires on the rear axle of his mustang and swears that traction improved on the theory that thinner tires = more psi on the road = more traction. Any thoughts? I will have to replace two tires anyway in next oil change or so.
p.s. another reason could be that the 1995 doesn't have traction control?
